Second graders got reacquainted with the color wheel and color theory, but first we learned a little about the artist, Wassily Kandinsky, who made abstract paintings with various kinds of line. Once students drew different kinds of lines (including vertical, diagonal, and horizontal lines), they started painting with watercolors. Students were directed to paint using color theory, with either analogous or complementary colors adjacent to each other.

Transdisciplinary Theme: How We Express Ourselves Central Idea: People create art to communicate their feelings and personal experiences. Students express themselves using color and lettering they create. DA student Gallery (video below) Having learned about the artist Henri Rousseau, students are creating their own depiction of a tropical rainforests with permanent marker. Small details are colored with magic marker, and finally the rest is painted with watercolors.
Concepts:
All second grades have at least started their trees and treehouses. We have viewed several examples of trees and treehouses, and we have talked about our personal experiences with both in real life. Students were shown how to draw realistic trees, and then how to "build" the house in tree using paper strips. Creativity is strongly encouraged! |
